Hello, I am originally from Toronto and believe we may all be related. My Aunt Lea Ainsworth just passed away and I have some notes we had put together a number of years ago when she was still somewhat healthy. I had an first cousin once removed by the name of Shirley Van Idestein. Shirley married my mom's Uncle Fredrick George Wilson. I believe they had two daughters, Cynthia and Kathy. We also think Kathy married Ken Kennedy. I know there was some relationship or family in P.E.I. as I visited there once when very small. My Mother was Elva Violet Ainsworth (step father's name) (Jillings was her fathers name). Does any of this jive with anyone on this web page? Dave Cromar

Thanks so much for putting this together. My Van Iderstine connection is through my second great-grandmother, Margaret (1819-1890) who married Neil MacLeod. Although they lived on PEI, I grew up in northern New Jersey and so am familiar with many of the place earlier ancestors lived. It's all very fascinating! 5/30/2016

Christopher is my father and there are five of us Hanna (great) grandchildren who all loved Great Grandpa Oscar very much. He was such a handsome man! My Nana Freda is still alive and well, living in White Rock, British Columbia. She still travels back to PEI every year. Thank you so much for putting all this information together. I was so happy to see my Great Grandmother Christine Macphee, or "Big Nana" there too, and more of my family! Absolutely incredible. I am 24 and living in New Zealand with my two brothers.

I am the daughter of John Ireland Van Iderstine Jr. (1922-2015) and sister of David J. Van Iderstine, who already signed this guestbook above. I was unaware of the PEI Van Iderstines before a co-worker on Cape Cod, MA who was born there, told me what a common name it was, which amazed me, since no matter where I've lived, there has almost never been another one in the phone book. Finding that the name was created by a common ancestor explains a lot.

Very interesting website. I am not related in any way, but love our local history. It seems that there may be a link between the Tades plantation, Wallington, New Jersey from the late 1600's and this family tree. This land was later known as the Van Iderstine property and my friend bought the house dating back to the 1860's. More info on the plantation on the Wallington, New Jersey town website in the history section. I hope this info helps, if this is the same family tree.

Thank you for your comments in the following post,Bob. For any readers that may not be aware, Pete Van Iderstine was a successful drag racer and operated a chain of automotive speed shops in the New Jersey area. Pete had a brother named Kent which I thought was very cool because we had the same name. Anyway, we became friends and talked often on the phone until sadly, in 2008, he passed away. He was a great guy and I wish that I could have met him in person and got to know him better.

We may be related... I am trying to determine whether my ancestor Jacob Hugh(e)s Esq., a NB-based Methodist born in PEI in 1824/5 according to the various censuses of Canada from 1861 onward, was the grandson of Nicholas Hugh(es) UEL of Lot 64 PEI, ex Philadelphia, d. 1831. If so, Jacob would be either a son or nephew of David Hughes and Catharine (Van Iderstine) Hughes, the only adult Methodists of that surname (however spelled) known to be living on the island in 1841. I'm wondering if it's possible, given the family's Dutch/Danish tradition, for the names Jacob and John to be interchanged. Jacob Hughs was already living in NB in 1844 when he married my GGGGrandmother Eliza Whelpley. Might he therefore be the son who might 'return in 2-3 years' who is mentioned in David Hughs's 1847 will?

I'm the "official" genealogist for our little branch, descended from the Brooklyn Van Iderstines who ran the rendering plant on Newton Creek in LI; the first business in the US to be shut down by the Supreme Court for stinking so bad! [It took them 150 years to do it, in 1977; founded around 1825.] When, oh when, are the Van Iderstines of the World going to have a GIANT FAMILY REUNION?!?!? There is No Disputing that we are all related, as there was only one Michael Tades, and it's his progeny who invented the "Van Iderstine" name. C'mon, it'd be a blast!

27 April 2010 19:20 E.D.T. A few weeks ago I added information about myself and my late wife Dynthia Fagans Doremus, who was younger sister of Leslie-Jo Fagans Van Iderstine. We were married 7 August 1971 at Basking Ridge Presbyterian Church, in Somerset County, New Jersey. Leslie-Jo's husband Peter gave away the bride since their father Lester Earle Fagans had died 10 years earlier. Lester was a famous Seascape Artist and a musician. Peter is President of Van Iderstine Speed Shops and lives in California. His wife Leslie-Jo died about a year ago. Peter is father of three daughters Kendall, Jennifer, and Ericka each of whom have provided him with 1 or more grandchildren. My wife Dynthia died November of 1991 while our two children Jody Louise and William Lester were still very young. It would be nice if we all could know each other better. Since I am the fourth of five children and each of them are scattered it would be very nice if we could share some of our experiences. Best regards Bill

The PEI branch of the United Empire Loyalist Association has finally reprinted the 1983 edition of the book "An Island Refuge". They have updated some family lineages including the Van Iderstine information I forwarded to them in 2002. The book has been a long time getting to press due to an aging executive on the UEL Association. You may order copies directly from David Hunter : dhunter@islandregister.com I have pasted below the announcement that David Hunter put on his website about the book: I picked my copy up last night and it looks great. If you are interested you should contact him directly. AN ISLAND REFUGE REPRINTED! Monday on the way to work, I picked up 200 copies of "An Island Refuge" from the printers. It is now finally ready. I only have to pick up shipping envelopes, then determine postage costs, and then I will begin selling them on behalf of the Abegweit Branch, United Empire Loyalist Association. The price will be $40.00 plus the postage cost CDN or USD. If you are on the Island and pick it up from me, it will only be the $40.00. I will carry a box of them in the car with me. I will be doing more with this this week, and hopefully by Friday can give you full ordering information. For those of you who are new to the Register and to this newsletter, transcribing this book, and putting it in computer format was a project of the Island Register and a number of its users. Many hours went into the work on it, and as a result of our efforts, it is finally back in print. Now, with its new computer format correcting errors in the book will be much easier and can be done between printings. The original book was printed using plates, long lost through the years. The overall quality of the reprint is good, and the Branch is proud to be able to offer it again. To begin with orders will by necessity be cash or cheque, but as I get the time, I will be setting up a Paypal payment system. Ordering details will be available hopefully by the by the end of the week. I will also be updating the book listing on the book review page and on the UEL page as I find time to reflect this new printing. This has been a very long term project - much longer than it should have been, and I am pleased to announce its availability once again! http://www.islandregister.com/booksad.html#air

Thank you for all your time and effort in putting this together. I see my cousin Michael Cowan has also found your site; His father Peter is my mother's (Elizabeth) brother. Our Grandfather Charles is the youngest son of Joseph and Jane(Hagart)VanIderstine. After our grandfather's birth his parent's passed and the three youngest boys; Charles, Peter and Lemuel were put into an orphanage. When their older sister Rebecca married George Cowan they brought the three boy's home and raised them as their own; changing their names to Cowan. I have been in touch with Gordon Furness and Pamela MacLean and have sincerely appreaciated their correspondance and welcome any correspondance from other relatives. I would love to know our family. Most of our cousins live in British Columbia. Seven of us live in Washington and Oregon USA, as our mother moved here when she married. If any one knows more about the adoption of our Grandfather and Uncles please let me know the information. THANK YOU!!Feb 11th, 2008
