By the passing away of Thomas J. Furness, late of Vernon, whose tragic death has been already referred to in the press, the community and province have lost an estimable friend and citizen.

The late Mr. Furness by his genial and kindly disposition endeared himself to all who knew him. He was for many years connected with the Department of Customs and Excise and here he displayed those same gentlemanly qualities which mad him the friend of all. He was also a very efficient farmer, and here to his efforts were crowned with success-having at the time of his demise, one of the finest properties in that section of the country. Though, at the time of his death, in his seventy- fifth year, yet he was beloved by old and young alike.

The late Mr. Furness leaves to mourn his loss the following sisters: Mrs. Wellington Hume of Iris, Mrs. Duncan Mathieson, Vernon River and Mrs. Anthony Johnson of McDougall's New Brunswick. Also one daughter, Mrs. Albert Drake, Millview, and two sons, George W.C. of Toronto and Wilfred L. on the homestead at Vernon, besides a large number of more distant relatives and friends.

Mr. Campbell of Pownal. During the service Mrs. George R. McLeod sang very effectively "My Ain Countree". The pallbearers were Messrs. W.A. Jenkins, Osbert Enman, J.J. McGillivary, A.J. "I watched a sail until it dropped from sight Over the rounding sea.

A gleam of white, a last far flashed farewell, and like a thought

Slipped out of mind, it was vanished and was not.

Yet to the helmsman, standing at the wheel,

Broad seas still stretched beneath the gliding keel.

Disaster? Change? He felt no slightest sign.

Nor dreamed he of that far horizon line.

So may it be perchance, when down the tide Our dear Ones vanish.

Peacefully they glide on level seas, Nor mark the unknown bound,

We call it death-to them 'tis life beyond"

Clipping from the Gordon Furness Collection undated.

Notes for EDITH BOYCE HUGH:

Edith Hugh, B.A., B. PAED.

Edith Hugh was born on May 28 1899, at Murray Harbour, P.E.I. was the eldest of four children born to Lillian (nee LeLacheur} and William Hugh. She attended Murray Harbour public school for a time, but an early illness forced her to discontinue school attendance. Through home study, and what could only have been a burning determination to succeed, she entered Prince of wales College with a high enough standing to secure for herself a Kings County Scholarship. After successful completion of her studies at Prince of wales College, she studied for and received her B.A. Degree from Mount Allison University. To further qualify herself for what she recognized as an important task, she completed the requirements for the B. Paed., at Toronto, as well as taking an educational tour of Europe and a course at Oxford.

She taught at Brampton Hall in Toronto before returning to her native province to take a teaching position at Prince of Wales College. She carried out her duties as a mathematics teacher in a most capable manner until her death in 1945, at the age of forty-five years.

The following tribute to Edith Hugh was published in the October, 1945, issue of the Prince of Wales College Times:

"Some teachers achieve the respect of their students at the expense of their affection, others achieve their affection at the expense of their respect. Miss Hugh was one of those rare few who drew the line between the two with such nicety as to achieve both. She was ever tolerant of human weaknesses and human failings, recognizing the individual problems of her students, and yet while making all due allowances for these, she expected and attained a high standard of scholarship in her students.

"The teaching profession is not one that brings large rewards, either monetary or in public recognition. To prepare for such a profession as painstakingly and diligently as did Miss Hugh shows a zeal for service and a firm belief in the statement that, 'They serve God well who serves his creatures.' Students will realize that in Miss Hugh they have lost a valued instructor, who will not easily be replaced, and an understanding friend."

From "Outstanding Women of Prince Edward Island" 1981.
