Descendants of Johannes VanYderstyn/John Van Iderstine
– Section 1

Generation No. 1

1. JOHANNES VANYDERSTYN/ JOHN1 VAN IDERSTINE was born 1753, and died 1839 in Vernon River. He married BRECHJE JANSOON / BREGET JOHNSON May 16, 1781 in Reformed Dutch Church New York City. She died Bet. 1798 - 1839 in Vernon River.

Notes for JOHANNES VANYDERSTYN/ JOHN VAN IDERSTINE:

Johannes Van Yderstyn / John Van Iderstine was born in Bergen County, New Jersey. Due to missing records it has been impossible to find a record of his birth or who is parents were. He appears to have been a descendant of Michiel Tadens, a tavern owner in New Amsterdam (New York City) in the 1640's. Court records state that Michiel Tadens was a native of Witzwort on the Eiderstedt Peninsula near the Danish border. It seems likely that Michiel or his descendants may have changed their last name to Van Iderstine after coming to America to commemorate their last home in Europe. Read details about Michiel Tadens here.

John Van Iderstine was stationed on Staten Island during most of the American Revolution. On September 18, 1782 John Van Iderstine deserted his regiment according to Loyalist military records; no doubt he returned home to his wife and son. The Loyalist newspaper "Rivington's Gazette" contains the following entry from October 23, 1782: "John Van Iderstyne is at this time under sentence of death, at Morristown New Jersey." The muster rolls from the 3rd Battalion of the New Jersey Volunteers state that John returned to his unit on January 17, 1783. It appears that he was pardoned by the British and served until the end of the war. He was then evacuated with the other Loyalists.

They sailed for Shelburne, Nova Scotia with other Loyalist families where they stayed for a year. In 1786 they came to Vernon River, Prince Edward Island, where John and his family were given 340 acres near the headwaters of the Vernon River.

Here the family grew and then spread out across North America over the last two centuries. It is interesting to note that many of his descendants left Canada for the United States.

Notes for NANCY FRASER:

Ann Van Iderstine died 17th November 1856 wife of John aged 67.Her brief obituary was found in the " Islander " December 5, 1856 on page 2.

The letter from her son George to his brother John B. in New Brunswick dated January 13, 1857 describes the death of their mother on the 17th of November.

Another letter from George to John B. dated September 15, 1857 talks of the death of old Uncle Jerry on the 11th of September .The letter also mentions Aunt Enman which I assume to be Margaret Fraser Enman, as well as their Uncles John and William Fraser. Based on this information I have assumed that Nancy was the daughter of John Fraser and Isabella MacKay.

Notes for PETER VAN IDERSTINE:

In letters written from Peter's nephew George Van Iderstine of Vernon River to his brothers John B. and William in New Brunswick , Peter is still living in 1853.In 1857 he is visiting or living with his son Ebenezer and family in New Brunswick .A letter dated September 1857 asks if Peter has gone to Canada which would at that time be Ontario. Peter had two sons living in Ontario and perhaps this is where he died. There is no tombstone in the Vernon River cemetery to mark where he and his wife were buried.

Notes for ELIZABETH NICHOLSON:

In a letter written by George Van Iderstine of Vernon River to his brothers John B. and William in New Brunswick dated in 1853 , Elizabeth is mentioned as being sick. Two letters written in 1857 do not mention Elizabeth so I have assumed she died during this time.

Notes for CATHERINE VAN IDERSTINE:

Catherine Van Iderstine, widow of the late John Furness, who died in 1892, was born at Vernon River, 7th

March, 1823, and died at the same place 30th, January 1900. She was led to Christ during the great revival in 1842, conducted by the eminent and devoted Francis Methuen (Metherall) whose name is still fragrant in this community. Amid the cares of a busy household and the training of a family of thirteen children, Mrs Furness found time to cultivate the grace of hospitality. Her home was a resting place for the ministers and they were cheered and encouraged by her sympathy. She endeared herself to many by her tender and generous nature. her children were taught to love the Bible and to connect themselves with the church, she loved so well. Her last illness was short, though for several years her health had been failing. Quietly and peacefully she passed on to meet the loved ones gone before. her funeral was very largely attended, she rests from her labors, but her influence lives. From the Guardian May 5, 1900 page 7.

Catherine's date of death is somewhat of a mystery as her tombstone records the date as February 28 1901 .The Guardian reports her death in the February 3 1900 edition as taking place on the 30th likely being January 30 1900.

Her obituary says " she was led to Christ in 1842 by Frances Methern " , who was likely the Reverend Francis Metherall a Bible Christian Minister in the Vernon River area at that time.

At Vernon River Bridge, on Tuesday, the 30th inst. Catherine Furness, widow of the late John Furness, aged 77 years. From the Guardian, February 3 1900.

19. SARAH3 HUGH (CATHERINE2 VAN IDERSTINE, JOHANNES VANYDERSTYN/ JOHN1) was born April 4, 1810 in Murray Harbour, PEI, and died January 13, 1893 in Mt. Stewart, PEI. She married THOMAS GLOVER April 7, 1831 in Murray Harbour, PEI, son of DAVID GLOVER and ISABELLA WILSON. He was born July 23, 1807 in Dumfries , Scotland, and died December 8, 1873 in Murray Harbour.

Notes for SARAH HUGH:

Information on the descendants of Sarah Hugh and Thomas Glover came from the late Ruth Pigott Harper in Ontario.

Legend has it that Thomas Glover came from Scotland about 1820, with his parents, and they settled in the Murray Harbour area. It is said that an elder sister, Janet, died of smallpox before the family emigrated to Canada (re: Aunt Fanny [Pigott] Farquharson). Marriage to Sarah Hugh, dau. of David and Catherine (VanIderstine) Hugh, of White Sands, Lot 64,P.E.I., is recorded as April 7, 1831. The discrepancy here may be explained on pages 11 & 12, P.E.I. Re: Genealogy Newsletter Genealogy, November1994, "The Registry Book of Marriages kept by the Rev. Thomas Adin, for the Parish of Charlotte, between the years 1823 and 1826 of his incumbency have mysteriously disappeared, and thought to have been taken by Rev. Adin, when he retired and returned to England". There were 12 or 13 children born of this marriage. It has been said that Cornelius was son of Catherine the eldest daughter. There were 9 sons at least, and 3 daughters. Buried in the Glover Family Plot, Murray Hbr. S., the stone reads," Thomas Glover, Dec 8, 1873, Ae 66 yrs, & 5 mos".

Sarah Hugh was the granddaughter of Loyalists, Nicholas Hugh\Anne Roberts of PA and John VanIderstine\Breget Johnson of N.J. She married Thomas Glover from Dumfries, Scotland and had 12\13 children. Birth date from original hand written records. She died of a stroke while visiting her youngest daughter, Mary Janet (Pigott), in Mt Stewart, January 1893. Mary Janet's youngest child, Louis (my father) was born in August of that year. Buried in the Glover Family Plot, Murray Hbr. S., the stone reads, "Sarah Hugh, w. of Thomas

Glover, d. Jan 13, 1893, Ae 83". Re: P.E.I. Genealogy Newsletter #71, dated Nov 1994, Vol 18, #4 - "There is no record of marriages which took place in St Paul's Anglican Church, Charlottetown, between 1823 & 1832. The records for the incumbency of Rev. Adin and some additional years, disappeared when he went back to England It, then, became necessary for the Legislature of P.E.I. to pass an Act, which appeared in the Royal Gazette Newspaper requiring persons who had married during that time frame to come forward and have their marriages put on record". Could this be the reason for the discrepancy between this marriage date and the birth of Catherine, their first child??? Living with son, Robert, single, in 1881 census.
